ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

We are grateful for the opportunity to be stewards of this space, and look forward to ensuring it thrives for many years to come.

The core value for all involved with the Yea Wetlands is framed around the importance of water, wetlands ecology and sustainable uses of finite energy resources. All the programs and activities within the centre reflect these values. They challenge visitors to consider the impact of their actions on the environment and provide engaging onsite learning opportunities both within the centre and outside in the wetlands.

The Yea Wetlands Discovery Centre incorporates numerous sustainable design elements and features a visually striking facade framed by a series of massive timber pillars milled from Silvertop Ash sourced from Victoria. The design aims to have minimal ecological impact and to maximise the environmental performance of the building. Sustainable design elements include:

  • Passive solar design and northern orientation
  • Radial sawn, sustainably harvested timber
  • Rain water harvesting for use in toilets and on the garden
  • Low water use fittings and fixtures
  • Photovoltaic solar panels
  • Low wattage energy saving internal and external light fittings
  • Native landscaping with low water requirements
  • Low volatile organic compound (VOC) materials for clean indoor air
  • Double glazing and open-able windows for natural ventilation and overnight air-purge
  • Windows and white, dispersing surfaces to spread natural light and reduce need for artificial lighting
